The gaming industry has suffered terribly in quality gaming this past year. As a gamer and an artist (not game designer yet…*keeps fingers crossed*) I’d like to take some time out to applaud those who have succeeded in keeping me occupied in the downtime.
Now I like to think of myself as a wizard of the gaming world, so from here on out I will be referring to myself as Zorander, and I’ve been gaming since I could walk. MY first console was NES, and my favorite game was The Legend of Zelda. I still have the gold-plated game cartidge, which is an awesome way to catch a non-gamer’s eye and to move some units btw. But with all the new technology and amazing things that can be done with design I’ve found myself constantly looking for the next game that is both immersive AND aesthetically pleasing.
Along with gaming, I was born with a pencil and sketchbook attached to my hands (my mom said it was excrutiating haha) so you can’t have a game that looks good but plays like shite or vice versa. Few have accomplished this, and only one has done it to perfection: SPORE.
Electronic Arts’ Spore was released a couple months ago; however it is still the best designed game to date. With the ability to literally create whatever kind of race you want , be it humanoid or not, and play throughout 5 very different stages in the evolutionary chain how could this not be the best game ever made? The designers went all out for almost 10 years creating this masterpiece and have done very well.
The overall design of the game is genius; create a creature and take it from a cell all the way to an advanced space exploring race. The best thing about it is that YOU, the gamer, are the designer. Yes that’s right. YOU decide and create what your race looks like. YOU decide what kind of buildings you race lives in. YOU decide what your race travels in, be it car, boat, plane, AND space craft. But it all starts with the ridiculously awesome creature creator.
Three arms, two mouths, ten eyes? Hey whatever floats your boat. The creature creator is so simple to use, but can create such complex and beautiful creations. It’s unbelievable what can be accomplished with this simple tool. Matter of fact, it’s such a well developed tool that it alone was sold as a stand-alone game before the full SPORE was released. You could literally lose days of your life to creating and designing creatures to be used in your or other player’s games via the online community. Once you create a creature or building or vehicle you can chose to upload it to the EA’s servers and share it with fellow designers/gamers.
This is the most attractive feature for someone like me who would like to design games but just hasn’t gotten that far yet.
So for anyone who’s looking for something to dump hours, or even days, of their life into designing a creature and experiencing a world of their own imagination SPORE should be you’re top priority!
